Description

Workshop Date: Saturday, November 5, 10am-1pm
Registration Deadline: 11/1

In this 3-hour workshop taught by M. Kathleen Warren, students will create cyanotype prints using their own personal digital images. Although cyanotypes are often associated with prints of plant parts and found objects, the process has also been used to contact print photographic negatives as positive blue-and-white prints—this application of cyanotype printing will be the focus of this workshop.

Students should submit up to three of their personal digital images, including photographs of their paintings, ahead of the workshop. Instructions for submitting these images will be provided when you register. These monochrome digital image files will be used to make transparency negatives for the workshop. Then we’ll use the cyanotype process to make 5x7 and 8x10 blue-and-white archival prints suitable for display.  We’ll discuss the process, applications, and versatility of this 1800’s process as adapted to the 21st century.

This workshop will touch on modifications to the blue-and-white prints, then the second workshop “More Than Blue,” offered on November 6, will offer a more thorough exploration of these enhancements. Although the process is considered non-toxic, aprons are recommended (apron supplied by the student); the exposure of the paper in UV light will be done outside the building.

Tuition: $70 current museum members / $78 future members

Students are encouraged to also register for Kathleen’s “More Than Blue” workshop that will take place the next day, November 6. This workshop will build off of techniques taught in the “Images in Blue” workshop.

About the Instructor

Creativity has been part of Kathleen’s life from as early as she can remember. In her late teens, she fell in love with photography, and over the years she learned to use the tools of light, composition, and photo-manipulation to express herself. During a career teaching biological sciences in higher education, she also earned her A.S. degree in photography at Daytona State College. She has continued to create images with personal meaning and is currently working with alternative processing and mixed media encaustic methods that unite her photographic vision with hand-created art techniques.  She has been active in promoting the arts: helping found a co-op art gallery in Flagler County in the early 2000’s, serving as president of the Photography Club of Flagler County, and currently serving as vice-president of the Florida Women’s Arts Association. As a retired educator, she takes great joy in teaching and sharing her passion for photography and art. Currently, you can find her award-winning work displayed at Galerie Elan in Daytona Beach, FL, and at Art Spotlight in Ormond Beach, FL, as well as in monthly shows at venues including the St. Augustine Art Association and Marion Cultural Council galleries.
