Subtractive Drawing with Colored Pencil: Zebra Workshop with Kathi Darby

This class will introduce beginning students to a technique called subtraction drawing. Skills taught include prepping the drafting film and using a variety of materials to "subtract" the drawing from the prepped film. There are many ways to do this, but we will start with a simple black and white zebra. The instructor will provide reference photos, line drawings and a prepped Dura-lar sheet for each student. Students are responsible for other supplies; please see list below. Open to students 16 and older

SUPPLY LIST:

1) Dura-lar 2 sided matte film with .005 thickness (size: 9x12). We will use this for several upcoming projects, so I strongly suggest students buy their own pads. This can be ordered from most art websites or Amazon. A substitute would be Grafix 2-sided matte drafting film, .005 thickness and can be ordered in single sheets or a roll.

2) Pencils: 2 black pencils, 2 white pencils - Prismacolor or Colerase is recommended but any brand will be okay as long as it is artist grade. Also a sienna brown, chocolate or henna (any bright reddish brown.)

3) Erasers: Tombow mono zero both round and rectangular, gray kneaded eraser, plastic eraser (Factis or Vanish are good, but any plastic eraser will work), Mr. Clean magic eraser, cotton balls, bath tissue, Q-tips.

About the Instructor

Kathi Darby loves teaching and looks forward to exploring different styles and techniques with her students. Her teaching credentials include colored pencil classes at the Flagler County Art League, Michaels, and Arts4All Florida, in addition to leading private lessons and workshops. She has a successful pet portrait business, Pets on Paper, and accepts private commissions. Her colored pencil artwork is hanging both in both public and private collections, and has been juried into several prestigious exhibitions. Kathi is a 13-year member of the Colored Pencil Society of America. She has has served on the CPSA St. Augustine Chapter Board of the for the past three years, and is also a member of the St. Augustine Art Association. She has studied with nationally recognized artists and CPSA members, including Barbara Dahlstedt, Gemma Gylling, Denise Howard, Amy Lindenberger, and Bonnie Haney. Kathi has also worked closely with Bill Shoemaker and Hanneke Jevons, and meets with a group of colored pencil artists weekly.
