Description

Over the course of four sessions, children ages 3 to 4 will explore the elements of art, including lines, colors, shapes, textures. In this immersive learning experience led by OMAM’s Curator of Youth Programs Diamond Johnson, participants will learn about famous artists, how to critique artworks, and use a variety of materials to creatively express themselves, make connections and develop fine motor skills.

A parent or guardian must be present with the child during this one-hour class. All supplies are included with tuition ($100 for Museum members; $150 future members; $50 an additional sibling aged 3 or 4).

Sessions:

Monday, May 1: This dashing week, little artists will focus on the element of art: line! In a pre-art activity, they will use their imaginations and develop motor skills to participate in forming various lines with their own little bodies and, with just as flexible, pipe cleaners! Then, after observing and artistically critiquing Famous line artist Keith Harings's “Montreux" silkscreen artwork, little artists will enjoy creating new experiences with their loved one by creating lines with stencils using fabric markers on their new artist workshop tote!

Monday, May 8: This shapable week, little artists will focus on the element of art, shape! In a pre-art activity, they will engage with primary colored shape building blocks and non-toxic modeling clay, to practice hand-eye coordination. Then, after observing and artistically critiquing Famous shape artist Piet Mondrian’s “Victory Boogie-Woogie" artwork, little artists will create their own paper shaped house, complete with a rectangular door, two square windows, and a triangular roof! Little artists can add a circle sun and other creative additions to their artworks!

Monday, May 15: This vibrant week, little artists will focus on the element of art, color! In a pre-art activity, they will demonstrate motor control while engaging in multiple back-and forth communicative interactions with Teacher Diamond during color association with color popsicle sticks! Then after observing and artistically critiquing Famous color artist Helen Frankenthaler’s “Snow Basin" artwork, little artists will self-express & create a one-of-a-kind painting on canvas!

Monday, May 22: This smooth week, little artists will focus on the element of art, texture! In a pre-art activity, little artists will explore and experience a variety of textures through a tactile sensory board. Then, after observing and artistically critiquing Famous visual texture artist Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night" artwork, little artists will utilize texture rubbing plates to create their own texture artworks with oil pastels and crayons! But there’s more fun, for the second part of this art project, little artists will apply watercolor paints over their artworks.

The Little Artist Workshop Series will close with a special graduation ceremony at OMAM!
