Please join OMAM Guest Curator Ruth Grim on a special day trip to St. Pete for guided tours of the Dali Museum and the Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement. This visit to Florida's west coast follows up on Ruth's recent lectures at OMAM on Art Nouveau and the history behind the infamous banana taped to a wall.
In addition to the stunning architecture of these two Florida buildings, the Dali Museum contains one of the finest collections devoted to 20th century Surrealist art and MAACM, in turn, has an unparalleled collection of 19th century Arts and Crafts pieces from the movement that elevated the production and appreciation of fine artisanship in decorative arts throughout Europe and America. From Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic furniture and interior designs to Dali’s dripping clocks and lobster telephone, this trip will highlight some of the most brilliant (and eccentric!) artistic minds of the last two centuries and provide the opportunity to reflect on the changing notion of art and aesthetics that took place in the early 20th century. The approximately 40-year timespan (1890-1930) that roughly encompasses in intersection of these two museums was crucial to the history of Western art and this visit will reveal some of the vast social and cultural changes in this era through the objects on view.
Our chartered motorcoach (with onboard restroom) will depart from OMAM promptly at 8:00am and will return to OMAM around 7:00pm. Ruth will provide history and commentary on these collections, lead discussion topics about modern art, and provide previews of upcoming OMAM lectures on the bus trips to and from the museum. Other opportunities will include lunch at the MAACM and Dali Alive 360 (additional ticket required) in the Dali Dome that immerses the viewer visually in the artist’s surreal landscapes.
The trip registration fee ($40 Museum/Guild members; $50 non-members) includes transportation and Ruth's discussion during the ride. Participants are responsible for paying for their own meals, admissions, and other expenses. Since MAACM and the Dali are both part of the North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) Association, our premier-level members will be able show their current membership card and receive free admission. Those without NARM benefits will need to pay admission upon arrival (MAACM is $25 for adults; Dali is $32 for adults). Trip registration is non-refundable as seats are limited.
