ArtWave Youth Workshop: Jean-Michel Basquiat's Crown

Ages 10 to 14 are invited to join us in the OMAM Classroom to explore work by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 – 1988) and learn about symbolism in art before creating their own mixed media poster inspired by his style.

Basquiat was an American artist who became famous in the 1980s as part of a bold new art movement called Neo-expressionism. His work often explored big contrasts, like rich versus poor, inclusion versus exclusion, and what's happening inside us versus what the world sees. He mixed poetry, drawing, and painting all together, blending words and images, realistic and abstract styles, and history with sharp commentary on the world around him.

Tuition for this 90-minute program includes all supplies. Seats are limited, so signing up in advance is highly encouraged!

About the Instructor

Emma Dennison earned a master's degree in Critical Museum Studies from the University of Florida and a bachelor's in Studio Art from Stetson University. She grew up in a little town near Pittsburgh, but immediately fell in love with Ormond Beach after her family relocated to Florida a few years ago. Before joining the OMAM staff in May 2025, she completed a 240-hour internship here and also helped as an instructor during the museum's summer youth art camps.
